intro

How it came about

During the summer of 2021, I came across an intriguing design contest in my social media feed and decided to take a leap of faith. I was immediately drawn to the impressive lineup of judges, and I saw it as a fantastic opportunity to enhance my skills & having a fun weekend in the process.

The problem

Clarifying the need

Decided that for the first day of the challenge I will focus on defining the core problem, analyse competitors and explore user personas. I know it was a bit overkill since the contest placed a lot of emphasis on visuals but I took it as a challenge to brush up my UX skills as well and it helped me strip down the process to bare essentials considering the tight time-frame.

Personas

Understanding users

I had many ideas for who might use this app but for the sake of simplicity decided to use only one archetype to explore use-cases with. Meet Elena 👋. She’s the fictional archetype that helped me with this challenge. My job was making sure she has a terrific experience when booking a toolkit.

Main flow

The main user journey

Next, I put together some general user flows to describe the journey for Elena. Was focusing on identifying the main phases of her journey and distilling a complete experience from onboarding to successfully renting a toolkit.

Screen no. 1

Toolkit explorer

This is the main screen that users see when they open the app. The goal was to make it very easy for Elena to find what she’s looking for: sorting toolkits by categories, displaying popular toolkits and the ability to specifically search for a toolkit if its not displayed on the explore page.

Screen no. 2

My toolkits

As you can see, toolkits have different types and sizes to them. The reason for this was to solve the problem of having to look in different places for the right tools. We've assembled toolkits for many types of popular activities but you can also rent individual tools if you need something that you can't find in a particular kit.

Takeaways

Learned alot about time management

I had a highly productive experience with this challenge and it provided me with valuable insights into the benefits of working within tight deadlines. It certainly stimulates creativity and compels one to prioritise efforts. While additional time would have allowed for more refinements, I am nonetheless very content with the end result.
