Can record store clerks handle orders more intuitively?
They way record stores handle their orders is pretty ancient. They print a list that contains the order items and the store clerk manually checks the warehouse and picks said items individually of that list. Not ideal. This process can create lots of problems: people mixing the lists, losing them, being dependent on a printer, having to keep track of orders manually and so on. There was a terrific opportunity to sync all the bits and pieces into one product that aims to unify all aspects of a record store from picking items to store management to shipping orders and keeping track of them.

Defining the core aspects of the app and how they fit together
Together with the client we prepared user flows in order to sketch out the main user journey for a store clerk and to better understand what happens troughout the whole process. Based on our conversations, we decided to focus on building the application around these 4 main pillars: • Orders overview • Picking flow • Discogs integration & order details • Packing & printing labels Our focus was to make the product responsive on tablets & mobile so that clerks could take the devices with them while picking orders.

Orders
Orders overview
This is the first page the user sees when they open the app. It was very important to show the order of the picking process so we connected the tabs that are part of it with a line. Think of this page as a giant bucket where all the orders come in from various channels: Discogs, your Shopify store, Ebay and so on. You can select new orders to prepare them for picking.

Prep work
Prepping orders for picking
To prep your orders for picking you must first select the new orders that you want to pick and assign them to a box. This box will translate in real life to the box letter you have in your warehouse, so you will always know what orders are in which picking box. Orders are separated via a separator that holds a number which represents the position of that order in that box.

You can have multiple separators in a box as a clerk would pick multiple orders in one session
Picking orders
The Picking Flow
Once all orders are ready you can start the picking process. It will prompt each order one by one on the screen so you can see very clearly all the important information such as location o the order in the store and its proper location in the box. You also have useful indicators such as order condition and progress.

We made item location stand out so clerks can find the items easier in the warehouse
Packing
Packing & Order details
After the clerk picked the orders, they must be packed & weighed individually and enter that information on the order details screen. This step is important because after you mark an order as Packed you will be able to generate the shipping label that will go on the package to be sent. The status of the orders must be updated manually as they are being updated throughout the flow.

Shipping
Generating shipping labels
All packed orders need to have Shipping Label before being sent to the customer. The clerk must select the shipping provider and desired price for each package from that order. We designed this flow so clerks would have all the necesary information at hand such as customers address, internal notes and so on. After the label is generated clerks can opt to choose to mark order as shipped in case they send it the same day or attach a custom message for the recipient.

Becoming familiar with the challenges faced by the record store industry and assisting store clerks with order management has given me a deeper understanding of this field. I am eager to continue contributing to this industry.
